Direct Resource is a relationship to the Day Master
BaZi does not assign Direct Resource to one universal element. The Day Master is the reference point. First find the element that generates it: Water generates Wood, Wood generates Fire, Fire generates Earth, Earth generates Metal, and Metal generates Water. A generating stem with opposite polarity to the Day Master is Direct Resource, traditionally called Zheng Yin.
A quick identification example
For a Jia Wood Day Master, Water is the Resource element because Water generates Wood. Gui is yin Water, opposite to yang Jia, so Gui is Direct Resource. Ren is yang Water, the same polarity as Jia, so Ren is Indirect Resource. Change the Day Master and the Resource element changes with it; this is why a memorized keyword list is not enough.

Visible stems and hidden stems are not identical
Direct Resource can appear as a visible Heavenly Stem or inside an Earthly Branch's hidden stems. A visible stem is easier to identify on a chart, while a hidden occurrence is interpreted through its branch, season, and activation context. Counting every occurrence as equally strong removes the structure that makes a Four Pillars chart meaningful.
How Direct Resource differs from Indirect Resource
Both Resource types describe the same generating-element relationship to the Day Master. The distinction is polarity: Direct Resource uses opposite polarity and Indirect Resource uses matching polarity. Traditional readings attach different symbolic language to them, but neither label should be converted into a rigid personality type without checking the full chart.
